Vedic Astrology - Directional Strength or Digbal of Planets

Strength, a term that signifies power and the ability to push through, carry big responsibilities, deliver results, guarantee credibility and most importantly, provide the desired results through the very intrinsic value of the term itself - Strength. In Vedic astrology, the sages represented the strength of planets through a six fold weightage of assigning values and using this methodology to derive the desired Shadbal. Within this broader system of assigning values based on intrinsic strength, a very important aspect is the concept of directional strength also known as Digbal, or the ability to give desirable or undesirable results pertaining to it's house position in a Vedic astrology birth-chart.

So, how are the planets divided based on maximum and least amount of directional strength based on their position in a birth-chart? The following are their least and highest points of strength:

Mars and Sun gain the highest directional strength in the 10th house, which is the house of karma and action zone, and they both perform excellent in such an environment. Similarly, Moon and Venus, which are softer planets perform well in the exactly opposite house, the 4th house of home, mother's nourishment, calm environment, by bringing in their calm and peaceful or sensual energy. Jupiter and Mercury in the 1st house give more awareness, learning ability, calculative mindset, strategic thinking and intelligence, and in the 7th house where they lose directional strength, Jupiter can generally harm the marriage and Mercury, if ill placed alone in the 7th, may make a child get dyslexia or a learning disorder (Although the same Mercury can eventually make the person astute in business too).

Planets start losing their directional strength after they reach the highest point, and vice versa. In general, the first house is always the East direction, 4th house is North, 7th house is West and 10th house is South direction respectively.

May god bless us all.
